CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Jameson

Jameson fisted and flexed his hands as he stood in front of the back door of the main house. Ava was leaving today, and they only had a few hours before she had to head to the airport. His throat had been tight all morning, and he’d been too worked up to sleep much last night.

Everything was fine. She was leaving today, but she’d come back. It was only two weeks. They could make it through two weeks. Those thoughts had been a broken record lately.

He truly believed they could, but the fact that they hadn’t made it through one week together yet was a sneaky little cloud casting a shadow over his optimism. What if her mother talked her into staying when she got back to Denver? What if her boss offered her a raise to stay?

What if he lost her and there was nothing he could do to get her back?

He pulled his phone from his pocket and texted Ava, letting her know he was waiting outside. The sun wasn’t up yet, but he knew she was awake. She’d sent him a good morning text before sunrise every day for the last five days.

Sticking his phone back in his pocket, he settled on the top step of the porch to wait. He rested his arms on his knees and bowed his head. As soon as his head lowered, he was reminded of the prayers he should be saying for Ava.

Please, Lord, keep her safe as she travels today.

Please, Lord, give her strength to face the troubles waiting for her.

Please, Lord, give her confidence to guide her through this move.

And, finally, Lord, help me to be patient. Help me to be strong and focused so I can help her when she needs me.

He hoped she wouldn’t need him, at least not in any drastic way. Her confidence was growing every day, and he knew she could face her mother on her own.

The question was, did Ava know that?

The door behind him creaked, and he stood in a rush. Ava stepped out with a cup of steaming coffee in each hand.

He reached for one of the cups and closed the door behind her. “That was fast. I thought I’d be waiting longer.”

Ava rose up onto her toes and pressed a lingering kiss on his lips. Her vanilla scent mixed with the cold air, tingling in his nose.

When she broke the kiss, her eyes remained closed for a few seconds. “I wouldn’t make you wait out here in the cold alone.”

His smile faded on that last word. Alone. They’d both be alone in just a few short hours.

Ava cupped her hand around his chin. “No, no. None of that.”

“What?”

She stared up at him with a look of determination. “I’m going to need you to stop thinking about being apart and start remembering that we’re together. We’re together now, and we’ll still be together tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. Until I get back.”

He wrapped an arm around her and kissed the top of her head.
